After all, Dylan had never missed a chance to put her down. Back when she’d been working her butt off in the lab, excitedly developing that breakthrough drug to help boost his carcer, Dylan only complained that she was stealing his spotlight.
Someone as petty and stubborn as Dylan didn’t deserve an ounce of her effort.
“Let me make this crystal clear,” Jennifer said, her voice sharp as ice. “An apology? Not happening. And getting down on my knees? You can forget about it.”
Dylan was practically shaking with rage.
He shot a glance at Millic. “See? This is exactly what I mean. about Jennifer’s attitude. She’s got Timothy backing her up now, so suddenly, the Hargreaves family means nothing to her. I wanted to make peace but with an attitude like that? No way.
“As for the breakthrough drug, I doubt I’m in any mood to continue the research.”
Dylan’s message couldn’t have been clearer.

He shot a glance at Millie. “See? This is exactly what I mean about Jennifer’s attitude. She’s got Timothy backing her up now, so suddenly, the Hargreaves family means nothing to her. I wanted to make peace but with an attitude like that? No way.

If Jennifer and Timothy didn’t apologize, he’d completely shut down the research project. He’d like to see who gets desperate. first!
“But how can you just stop?” Millic burst out. “You’re so close. The clinical trials were just around the corner. How can you

that away?”
She was frantic. Her greatest wish in life had always been to see her son walk again, to watch him stand tall and shut up everyone who’d ever mocked him. And now, with the solution right in front of them, Jennifer was ruining everything.
Millie whirled around to face Jennifer and, without warning, slapped her hard across the face.
Caught completely off guard, Jennifer took the full force of the
blow.
“Get on your knees and apologize to Dylan right now,” Millie growled, her face twisted with rage. “That’s an order.”
Jennifer’s eyes turned to ice. “I won’t do it.”
Millie’s hand shot up for another slap, but this time, things didn’t go her way. Jennifer caught her wrist mid–swing.
“You don’t get to push me around on this,” Jennifer said, her grip firm.
“Oh, I don’t?” Millic’s voice dripped with contempt. “Then who

does? Let me remind you. The only reason you got engaged to my son was because of Dylan’s breakthrough drug research. Did you really think you were good enough for the Clark family otherwise? Now that the drug’s been developed, what right do you have to stand in the way? My son’s future is at stake here. Are you ready to take responsibility for ruining it?”
Millie’s eyes were red–rimmed and desperate. “What’s it going to take, Jennifer? Do I have to get on my knees and beg?”
Her son’s paralysis was Millie’s deepest wound, the thing that kept her up at night. When it came to her son, there was nothing. she wouldn’t do.
Jennifer’s cheek stung where Millie had slapped her.
Millie’s grip on her arm was like a vise, her nails digging into Jennifer’s flesh until she could barely stand the pain.
“Timothy will walk again.” Jennifer met Millie’s gaze steadily. “I promise you that.”
“If you really mean that, then get on your knees right now and apologize to Dylan. Let him continue his research. How else is Timothy ever going to get better?”
Jennifer took a deep breath, fighting to keep her voice steady. “I’ll find a way to fix this.”
Millie finally snapped. “You say you can fix this? How exactly? Our families were getting along just fine until you got my son caught up in your mess with Dylan. You started this fire. Now

“I’m not getting on my knees to apologize,” Jennifer shot back firmly. “We can discuss this when we get back.”
She couldn’t say more with Dylan right there. That would only make things worse.
Dylan’s eyes narrowed at Jennifer’s words. A flash of suspicion crossed his face. “Could she actually remember the formula for that breakthrough drug?” he thought and then shook his head. “No way. She couldn’t be that clever.”
“Playing hardball, aren’t you, Jennifer?” Millie’s voice turned cold. “Now that I’ve brought you here, you’re not going anywhere.”
Millie jerked her head toward the security guards. “Get over here and hold her down. I want to see her on her knees, apologizing–today.”
She’d see just how stubborn Jennifer could be, thinking she could just ignore her demands like that.
Jennifer’s eyes widened as the security guards closed in. She couldn’t believe Millie would actually go this far.
