I looked at her face, but felt nothing. I
<
wondered if Sarah would make sweet and
sour ribs for me.
“I don’t know and I don’t care.”
“Tiffany, you chose Luke. I blessed you and
left.” I shrugged. “Plus, we’re nothing, right?”
“Danny!”
She screamed, her eyes red. “You said we’re
nothing?”
“You saved me, you worked four jobs to
support me, you… Made me lose sleep, and
now you say we’re nothing?”
“Do you have a conscience?”
I laughed and looked at Tiffany, frowning.
<
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Tiffany, do
you have a conscience?”
“Have you forgotten what you said to me?”
She couldn’t answer.
I took a deep breath. “You said that those five
years were the most shameful days of your
life.”
“Then, you and your friends reminded me that
because I saved you, I have the good life.”
“Don’t forget, you said I was just an orphan
from a small town. Without you, I could never
be like this!”
“No! No…” She wanted to argue, but she
couldn’t.
I was tired. “Yes, if it wasn’t for the Suttons, I
wouldn’t have this life.”
“But I saved your life, so we’re even.”
“I don’t want to be even!” Tiffany screamed,
tears streaming down her face. She reached
for my hand.
I stepped back. “Stay away!”
“Tiffany, I know your dream is because you
were reborn. Because I was too.”
She stopped, looking at me.
“The things I experienced and the images of
my death still haunt me, so I won’t forget
what I went through.”
く
“God gave me a second chance. I don’t want
to waste it on a bad relationship.”
“I’m happy. I want to keep this happiness, so I
didn’t tell you about being reborn.”
“Now you know why I left you. I hope you
respect my decision.” I looked at her. “So,
don’t bother me again.”
Finally, Tiffany left. I thought we wouldn’t see
each other.
But that night, she tried to kill herself.
The doctors said her body was already cold.
Tiffany was in the bathtub, her wrists cut to
the bone.
Luckily, her maid found her in time.
く
Sarah asked if I wanted to visit her. I was
silent, then laughed. “You’re so generous?
Should I get back with Tiffany and have two
girlfriends?”
Sarah laughed and hugged me. “I’m not that
generous.”
The next summer, Sarah and I got married.
She even invited my old neighbors.
She said, “I want everyone to witness our
happiness.”
Some people used my past to hurt me, but
Sarah treasured it, promising to treat me well
forever.
I don’t know what a perfect ending is, but I
think this is it.
く
It was almost time for the ceremony.
I sat in the room, nervous, fixing my suit and
hair. My phone rang.
It was a number I didn’t recognize.
I answered it, but there was silence.
I was about to hang up when a voice spoke.
It was Tiffany.
“Danny, I heard you’re getting married today.”
“Yeah.”
Tiffany was silent, then laughed. “I used to
think I would marry you.”
く
“Later, I did, but I didn’t appreciate it. I
deserved to lose you.”
“Danny, you said you don’t want to see me,
so even when I tried to kill myself, it didn’t
work.”
“You were so cruel to me.”
I sighed. “Tiffany, I almost gave my life to you,
so I have no regrets.”
“I know, so even though I’m unwilling, I chose
to help you.” She lowered her voice. “At least
Sarah makes you happy.”
“I’m sorry I can’t see you be happy.”
“I’ll travel the world, praying for you. May you
be safe and happy.”
く
“If you stop receiving my blessings, then
maybe I’ve died. But without you, dying far
away is the best.” She was calm. “Danny, I’m
sorry.”
“And I love you.”
I remembered ten years ago, when I saved
Tiffany. She wore a dress and sat beside me,
watching the sunset.
Tiffany turned to me and said, “Danny, I want
to watch the sunset with you forever.”
The wedding song started. I hung up and
walked toward my new life.
