Love’s Mark
Chapter 1
Four years after my death, Grandma dug out
my old phone and called Shane.
“Suhe, it’s been four years, and you finally
decided to call me?”
“What? Ran out of money, sugar daddy? Sell
yourself, don’t play the victim with me.”
“Let me tell you, I don’t want to see you, not
even if I’m dying!”
Grandma, on the other end, was stunned. Her
stooped back looked incredibly lonely.
She held the phone cautiously and asked,
“Shane, did you have a fight with Suhe? I
can’t find her.”
Grandma finished, her cloudy eyes staring at
the empty room. She murmured as if
remembering something: “Right, Suhe…Suhe
is gone…dead…how could I forget again…”

Maybe because I couldn’t bear to leave
Grandma, I stayed by her side after I died.
Unfortunately, Grandma had Alzheimer’s
disease and often forgot I was dead.
This time, she had another episode,
wandering off to the park alone and
forgetting her way home.
The stubborn little old lady sat on a bench,
muttering, “Getting lost isn’t a big deal, Suhe
will find I’m not home and come looking for
me.”
My soul stayed close to Grandma.
She wasn’t far from home, but since she
couldn’t hear me, I couldn’t guide her.
As the sun began to set, I, a disembodied
spirit, started to panic.
An almost eighty–year–old woman, left alone
in the park overnight, wouldn’t be able to
handle it.

Fortunately, Grandma seemed to realize this
too. Seeing fewer and fewer people around,
she finally stood up.
She approached someone and asked, “Have
you seen my granddaughter, Suhe?”
I knew that if Grandma asked someone, and
they talked for a bit, they’d understand her
situation and probably take her to the police
station.
Once at the police station, Grandma would be
safe.
Unfortunately, Grandma asked the wrong
person.
The person she grabbed was Shane.
Shane looked at Grandma, his tone impatient:
“Where’s Suhe? Why are you here alone?”
“Leaving you, an old woman, in the park this late… she must be off with…”
