“Hello, we are from the police station, are you
Ms. Serenity Hayes?”
“The hotel waiter said that your husband
jumped into the sea”
“We tried our best to search, but we haven’t
found anyone yet.”
Chapter 2
Serenity just froze, her phone slipping and
falling to the carpet.
She scrambled for clothes. Ryan noticed and
asked:
“What is it? What happened?”
Serenity was pale, her lips trembling. “The
police said Chris jumped off the coast…”
Ryan paused, then his face got incredulous.
“Off the coast? Is he crazy?”
Serenity just blew past him, grabbing her bag
and running out.
She felt the bus bump all the way, until it
finally pulled in to this small town.
I rolled down the window, took a deep breath,
and my heart started to settle.
I dragged my bag, a old suitcase, towards the
only schoolhouse.
Some kids stared at me, their faces ragged
but full of curiosity.
I smiled, pulled out a handful of candy.
“Hey, kids. Here, have some candy.”
The kids waited, then one, brave little boy
walked up to me.
He took a candy, slowly unwrapped it, put it
̈vvno are you? ̈
I bent down, touched his head, and said soft:
“I’m the new teacher, Mr. Chris.”
The little boy struggled my name and giggled.
“Hello Mr. Chris!”
The other kids started to giggle, “Hello Mr.
Chris.”
Looking at their faces, I felt something new
stir inside me.
:
Serenity reached the sea, saw search boats
bobbing out there, cop cars flashing on the
shore.
She ran to the cops, nearly tripping, and
stuttered:
“What is it? Did you find him?”
The officer shook his head. “Not yet, ma’am.
We’re still looking.”
She stared at the sea, confused.
She never thought Chris would hurt himself
like this, and end it.
They were so in love, but why did he want to
do that?
Ryan showed up, saw Serenity looking
broken.
He walked over, kicked a little. “Serenity, he’s
just trying to make you worried.”
Serenity just looked up, icy.
“Shut up! I could have been there this
morning, if it weren’t for you.”
Ryan flinched at her anger.
He was scared, and he didn’t want to lose it
all.
The search went all night, but they didn’t find
Chris.
Serenity stayed there, by the sea, the whole
time.
She started to remember Chris, the things
she had overlooked.
In five years of marriage, he had never said a
bad word to her.
He didn’t even like sweets, but to please her,
he acted like he did.
He always got her red sugar water when she
was on her period.
He supported her in her work, and was a
good listener.
He tolerated her bad temper, and spoiled her
for so many years.
She thought she could control everything.
If he found her relationship with Ryan, he
would have come back to her.
Г
He loves her that much, so she thought.
Now, the queen lost her servant.
It started to get light.
Serenity was about to give up when an officer
walked over.
“Ma’am,” he said, “We found something.”
He gave her Chris’s phone and wallet.
On the screen, a unsent message to Serenity.
Serenity opened it, it read:
“Serenity, I know you love Ryan. Be happy.
Goodbye.”
Serenity purst into tears.
