After I took a shower, I started folding my clothes and putting them into my bag. I didn’t know that it took too long until Emerson came in.
He knocked twice on the door and then got inside.
“What are you doing?” he asked me.
“As you can see, I’m folding my clothes. You did come to pick me up, right? So, I’m folding my clothes so after we’re done, we can leave.”

The gesture made me feel so loved and cared for. I smiled at him as I let him lead me to the table. I sat down, and then we had a quiet breakfast.
When we were done, I asked him,
“Okay, so are you going to help me with my clothes?”
“Yes, I think as we do that, we can continue our conversation.”
That’s when I remembered what he had said yesterday.
“Yes, that talk.” I sighed. “Alright.”
As we walked towards the bed, he casually asked, “So, how does it feel to be divorced?”
I laughed. “Well, I’m not exactly single, you know. Just yesterday, someone asked. me to marry him and I got engaged,”
He smiled at me as he sat on the bed.
“Okay, what do you want me to do?”
I took a bag and some clothes, placing them next to him. “Can you fold them? Have

“Break the news,” I repeated with a smile. “So, you were going to let me engage myself?”
He smirked. “I really don’t know how to navigate this relationship we’re going to have.”
“It’s not a relationship, Emerson. It’s a marriage. We are going to get married.” “Yeah, I guess I’ll just have to learn everything new all the way,” he said with a wink,
I couldn’t help but laugh softly. “Emerson, you’re such a flirt. How are you still single?”
He tilted his head slightly as if trying to figure out what I was getting at.
“How do you
mean?”
“I mean, you’re successful, you’re handsome, you’re still young.”
“Debatable,” he interrupted with a teasing grin.
I ignored him and continued. “Your charming, loyal, honest…. And you’ve been single for more than ten years. How? Why?”
He shrugged. “I guess I just didn’t find the right one.”

Emerson gave out a laugh that started low and grew into a full–on laugh.

“I’m glad you think that. I bought it with you in mind,” he said, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
“To tell the truth, I thought it just belonged to Eric’s mother.”
He chuckled, shaking his head. “Yes, that would have been hilarious. But no, she left with her ring. I never asked for it back. I gave it to her in the settlement.”
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. “So, sorry I couldn’t give you her ring.” He added
“No, no, no, that’s not what I mean,” I quickly replied. “This is perfect. It marks at new beginning. I don’t think it would have been great to wear a ring from a woman who was a cheater, disloyal, and broke your trust. This signifies something different …..it’s a fresh start. And I love it. “Of course,” he said softly.
As I kept admiring the ring, my thoughts focused on it. Then, out of nowhere, he asked,
“How long are you planning on being married?”
I blinked, taken aback. “Sorry, I don’t understand what you mean.
“I mean, how long is this revenge going to take? How long do you think the two of us. will need to stay married? Because this is going to be my second and last marriage. I’m not getting married again after this.”
His words hit me, but I tried to keep my composure.

Emerson laughed, and I joined in, though something about the conversation felt heavier now. “So I guess I’m planning to be married forever. Honestly, I never thought about how long it’s going to take. I mainly thought about hurting him as much as I could for the rest of his life.”
He chuckled, but there was a trace of pain behind it. “So I guess it’s forever you and me then.‘
I smiled, though his words ate at me.
“Well, I guess it is. Until you find the one, then.”
Emerson’s eyes met mine, a hint of something unreadable in them. “I don’t know. Maybe I already found her, and she just hasn’t realized it yet.”
His words stopped me in my tracks, piercing through my heart. I didn’t know why it bothered me but my heart clenched at the realization that he wasn’t talking about me. He had someone else in mind. He was in love with someone else.
I thought about telling him to break off the engagement, that he didn’t have to marry me, that we didn’t have to go through with this plan. He was probably doing this out of guilt or because he wanted to teach his son a lesson. But then, I remembered Eric and Rita’s faces.
The way they looked at me at the wedding, their smug expressions when they saw me there. If they found out I couldn’t even last a day being engaged to Emerson, I couldn’t bear it.

Emerson looked at me as he continued. “If you’re going to marry me, you’re going to be loyal. You’re going to be faithful. I left Eric’s mother because she wasn’t loyal or faithful. She betrayed my love, my trust, and our family. And your marriage to Eric ended for the same reasons.”
I felt our understanding of each other at that moment as he spoke. I knew exactly what he was talking about, the pain of betrayal and lost trust.
“So, for that, I don’t think I need to explain myself further. But I don’t want you. getting any ideas.”
“Of course,” I said quickly. “I would never think of doing that to you. Or ever.”
“When the time comes,” he said, calmer now, “when you find the man you love, someone you can trust, someone you want to start a life with again because you’re still so young and so very beautiful…you’ll want to have a family of your own someday. When that happens, you just have to tell me. We’ll get divorced quickly and peacefully. Our divorce settlement could be your wedding gift.”

I couldn’t stop the tear that escaped and rolled down my cheek.
Emerson noticed and stood up quickly, closing the space between us. He wrapped me in his arms, hugging me tightly, and then began to sway me back and forth.
The sudden movement caught me off guard, and I couldn’t help but laugh, a small release of the tension I hadn’t realized I was holding.
He ruffled my hair gently, his voice tender.

Emerson pulled back just enough to look into my eyes. I had to tilt my head up to meet his gaze, he was that tall or I was that short. Anyway, he always made me feel so small in comparison but also safe.

Without another word, Emerson grabbed my suitcases, effortlessly lifting them with his strong arms. I couldn’t help but watch his biceps flex as he carried the heavy bags towards the door.
“You should probably let me help you with one,” I said to his back.
“You just get your handbag,” he replied with a playful wink. “I’ve got you.
He opened the door, and I stood there for a moment, looking at him dreamily.
How I wished he was truly mine. How I wished that all of this wasn’t just part of some arrangement.
But it wasn’t real. And I knew that. Yet, at that moment, I couldn’t help but wish for
more.
