We sat in silence for a moment, until Emerson finally spoke, his voice more serious than before.
“What I really wanted to talk to you about is this marriage,” he began. “I know that we’re not in love with each other….you’re not in love with me….and this marriage. isn’t real. You’re only doing this for revenge.”
I nodded, unsure of where he was going with this.
“But I also want you to know,” he continued, “when you make that vow and you’re married to me, you represent me, the Blackwind name, my company, everything that comes with it. I can’t have you making me stand there in public with my dick in my hands.”
His words made me smile, but I quickly stopped when I saw the look on his face.
“Yeah, I understand. And I would never think of tarnishing your name. Or hurting you for that matter”
“I know,” he said with a slight nod. “But it’s good to talk about these things. To have them out in the open, so there’s no confusion or misinterpretation later.”
“Okay, I get it,” I replied, appreciating his forwardness.
Emerson looked at me as he continued. “If you’re going to marry me, you’re going to be loyal. You’re going to be faithful. I left Eric’s mother because she wasn’t loyal or faithful. She betrayed my love, my trust, and our family. And your marriage to Eric ended for the same reasons.”
I felt our understanding of each other at that moment as he spoke. I knew exactly what he was talking about, the pain of betrayal and lost trust.
“So, for that, I don’t think I need to explain myself further. But I don’t want you. getting any ideas.”
“Of course,” I said quickly. “I would never think of doing that to you. Or ever.”
“When the time comes,” he said, calmer now, “when you find the man you love, someone you can trust, someone you want to start a life with again because you’re still so young and so very beautiful…you’ll want to have a family of your own someday. When that happens, you just have to tell me. We’ll get divorced quickly and peacefully. Our divorce settlement could be your wedding gift.”

Emerson reached out and gently squeezed my hand. “You deserve to be cared for.”
“You deserve love, you deserve trust, you deserve all of that and more,” Emerson said softly, there was no mistaking the sincerity in his voice. “You deserve to get everything you’ve always wanted. And that’s what I want for you…to have it all.”
I couldn’t stop the tear that escaped and rolled down my cheek.
Emerson noticed and stood up quickly, closing the space between us. He wrapped me in his arms, hugging me tightly, and then began to sway me back and forth.
The sudden movement caught me off guard, and I couldn’t help but laugh, a small release of the tension I hadn’t realized I was holding.
He ruffled my hair gently, his voice tender.
“Come on, you’re okay. Tell me you’re okay
“I’m okay,” I said softly. “I’m fine. I am great. Never been so sure.
Emerson pulled back just enough to look into my eyes. I had to tilt my head up to meet his gaze, he was that tall or I was that short. Anyway, he always made me feel so small in comparison but also safe.

Emerson smiled, his eyes softening. “I think all your bags are in order,” he said, glancing around the room. “It’s time we go to your new home.”
I tried to lighten my voice.
“My forever home,” I chimed, attempting to play along.
He stopped and turned back to me, his expression unreadable. Then, suddenly, he stepped forward and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead, leaving me momentarily. frozen.
His touch was so tender, so caring, yet the look in his eyes was something I couldn’t quite understand. It was so confusing and weird.
Without another word, Emerson grabbed my suitcases, effortlessly lifting them with his strong arms. I couldn’t help but watch his biceps flex as he carried the heavy bags towards the door.
“You should probably let me help you with one,” I said to his back.
“You just get your handbag,” he replied with a playful wink. “I’ve got you.
He opened the door, and I stood there for a moment, looking at him dreamily.
How I wished he was truly mine. How I wished that all of this wasn’t just part of some arrangement.
But it wasn’t real. And I knew that. Yet, at that moment, I couldn’t help but wish for
more.
