Chapter 9
Maria
After Dad goes after Mom, I also run to my room. I thought I would feel better after separating Annie from Liam, but everything is going to hell. The love of my adoptive parents is what matters most to me. They accepted me from the moment the social worker introduced me to the couple. Although they were only supposed to be my temporary parents, given that my real family was so problematic and chaotic, it was decided that I would not go back to them and instead be raised by the Donovans Coming to live in this house was a dream. My biological parents never showed me the slightest interest, much less love, and always considered me a burden. But upon arriving here, I knew this was what a true family meant
I was accepted by the couple’s children, who welcomed me with brotherly love. Although the eldest, Liam, treated me like a little sister, to me he was the prince from the fairy tales I read. He dedicated all the time he had to me, but when the first holidays arrived, so did she.
That snobbish girl Liam’s age showed me her indifference and contempt from the moment she set foot in the house. When she arrived, she stole everyone’s attention, including that of my beloved blond. I was only nine years old. I had always been rejected, but in this family, I knew I could be happy. even though I wasn’t a Donovan. In my childish dreams, I thought that if I were one of them, I would never have to leave. So I began to daydream. I thought that if the prince mamed the princess, everything would be happiness for me. My only obstacle: Annie.
That foolish girl was in love with my Liam. I knew he might also feel something for her, but he didn’t want to admit it because she used to play cruel jokes on him and call him unpleasant nicknames. I knew he didn’t like those attitudes, so I behaved in a completely opposite manner to her. I wanted him to notice the differences and thus win him over from his friend because yes, I’m sure he has feelings for her
When I pass by Dad and Mom’s room, I can hear Mom’s crying and Dad’s slightly raised voice from outside, so I stop to listen.
1 cart. Trevor, I simply can’t tolerate this situation. Liam is ruining his happiness for a feeling that doesn’t exist. He has damaged what he had with Annie, for Maria. I love that girl, but I know they will never be happy. She is not for my son.”
I
Mom’s words hurt me. She has never considered me to be her daughter–in–law, I’m sure of that now. Maybe I will always be the abandoned girl that no one loves. Tears fall silently from my eyes. I dont want them to realize I’m here.
If you truly love them, her and your son, you must give them a chance. What’s done is done. The pain caused to the little butterfly cannot be undone. so think carefully about what you do. You must prioritize your closest ones. You know I also adore Annie, but if Liam’s happiness is Maria, I will support them: Let them realize on their own that what they feel is not real. Come on, dear, don’t drive them away from home. Let’s see where this relationship leads. They will have enough to deal with the disapproval of others.”
I hear my father convincing my mother. He has always loved me dearly and shows it with actions and words.
“You’re night, love. I might also be confused, and what they feel is real. I will support them, although I don’t know how much that will affect my relationship with Sam and David. But we will see as we go.”
They no longer speak. I imagine they are hugging while remaining silent, so I head to my room. Upon arriving, I throw myself on the bed.
I close my eyes and begin to remember how everything started with Liam,
**Flashback“*
“Liam, Liam, every time you go back to university I miss you so much. I wish you didn’t have to leave” I hug the strong torso of the handsome boy. He returns the hug. It feels good to feel his warmth.
I am no longer the little girl who arrived here. Now I am fifteen years old, and my figure has changed. I have the shape of an older woman, and I see that Liam has also noticed because he seems a bit uncomfortable. I lift my face and look into his eyes.
“Don’t you like hugging me anymore?” I ask with a pout. He looks back at me, and without expecting it, I stand on tiptoe to kiss him on the lips. It’s just a touch, but I see that he gets very flustered.
“Maria, this is not right. We are siblings I shake my head. I have to make it clear to him that we are not bound by any blood ties, not even by name
“No, we are not siblings. Liam, I like you. I like you a lot, and I want you to give me a chance. I know you probably have many girls at your disposal, but I just want you to remember that I will be here waiting for you. In a few years, I will become an adult. Engrave it in your head as I have it clear in mine. We
are not siblings.”
Something passes through his mind, so he nods. He knows what I’m saying is true. We are not bound by anything, and I truly desire to belong here. When he returned for the next holidays, things had changed between us. A complicity began to form that, when we were alone, ended in sweet kisses. We never dared to take a step further than that, but little by little, I convinced him that the only one who would love him more than anyone else would be me.

Except for that little woman. Like a plaque, she returned every time he was here and tried to keep us apart.
“You won’t achieve your goal, manipulative girl. The fool Liam might be attracted to your false innocence and vulnerability, but I know it’s a lie. I am with him most of the time, so I will make him fall in love with me and marry me when the time comes, so forget about whatever you’re planning.”
Hearing Annie’s words, I knew that before my blond left again, I had to make him feel committed to me.
“Liam. I wish you didn’t have to leave. Promise me you won’t forget me and that you won’t fall in love with anyone else.” The boy smiles.
won’t forget you. How about I ask you to be my girlfriend?” I smile and hug him. I look around, not wanting anyone to know what we are doing.
“Yes, yes, I want to be your girlfriend. Promise me that when I am old enough and you have finished your studies, you will marry me.” My request surprises him, but he only manages to smile. He takes my hand and intertwines his pinky finger with mine, like when I was younger.
“Maria Landon. I promise you that when I finish my degree and become a doctor with a stable job, I will marry you. Wait for me.” He says while seeking my lips. I am sure he will fulfil what he is promising me at this moment. I will be Mrs. Donovan, and no silly girl will be able to stop me.
However, Mom sensed something, and one day she decided to send me to that boarding school. She told me she didn’t like the way her son and I were getting closer and that it could lead to misunderstandings. I didn’t want to tell her anything about my relationship. I would give my fiancé time to find a way to fulfill his promise.
“End of Flashback“”
Is it wrong to fight for what is mine? She came between us. I have never been the third wheel, but she has. But I think that when weighed on a balance, I will always lose.
