- 6.
My envisioned end didn’t come.
Ethan, risking his life, carried me out of the
burning temple
He suffered multiple burns.
Not fatal, but severe.
And I, against all odds, lived.
The ambulance rushed me to the hospital, where I underwent emergency surgery for hours.
Ethan trembled at the door, refusing to leave.
Olivia came several times, begging him to get
treatment.
Ethan coldly told her to leave.
Olivia was shocked, but she clung to his hand,
feigning weakness.
“Ethan, do it for our baby.”
“You don’t want him to grow up without a
father, do you?”
Ethan shoved her away, glaring.
“Can’t you understand? I said leave!”
Olivia fell to the floor, clutching her stomach.
“Ethan, I’m hurting!”
She knew Ethan’s weakness. She used it to
<
hurt me.
But this time, he just stared at her.
“You’re hurting? Rachel isn’t?”
“I spoiled you, but don’t forget, Rachel is my
wife!”
“Without that incident, you wouldn’t even be
here!”
“Leave before I lose it! Don’t forget, you have
a hand in Rachel’s condition!”
His cold gaze frightened Olivia; she fled.
When she left, Ethan collapsed, his bloodshot
eyes fixated on the operating room door.
He prayed for my survival.
The operating room lights finally went out.
The moment the door opened, Ethan rushed
forward.
“Doctor, how is my wife?”
He couldn’t look inside, afraid to see me
covered in a white sheet.
The doctor patted his shoulder.
<
“Ms. Miller suffered severe burns. Luckily, she
was brought in on time. She’s alive.”
“But her will to live is weak, she stopped
breathing several times during surgery.”
“We recommend ending treatment. The burns
are severe; treatment will only prolong her
suffering.”
Ethan froze, despair etched on his face.
He knelt before the doctor, his pride gone.
He covered his eyes, his voice broken.
“I won’t give up!”
“She can’t die, she can’t!”
“No matter the cost, I want her alive! Please,
save her!”
He wept uncontrollably.
The doctor sighed, but the regret in his eyes
showed how dire my condition was.
After the doctor left, Ethan remained
kneeling.
When I was wheeled out, he snapped back to
L
reality.
I
I was covered in bandages, my eyes lifeless.
Ethan clung to my bedrail, tears streaming
down his face.
“Rachel, how did we come to this?”
“You promised to be with me forever. Don’t
leave me, okay?”
I stared at him, my eyes empty.
He saw my emptiness and I fell asleep.
