The pain in my lower back flared up again after Dustin bumped into me. I gritted my teeth and, drenched in sweat, I couldn’t bear it any longer, so I took a cab to the hospital.
It was already late at night, and the emergency room wasn’t crowded, but I still had to wait
for an hour.
The pungent smell of disinfectant filled the air. I watched the nurses bustling about. Slowly, the tension in my body began to ease, and before I knew it, I dozed off.
When I woke up, I found myself lying in a hospital bed. I glanced at the clock and found it was
3:00 AM.
The nurse came over and gestured for me not to get up.
“You fainted due to low blood sugar and showed signs of a threatened miscarriage.”
I was struck dumb. The image of me and Dustin kissing just two months ago flashed in my mind.
I felt lost for words. Just then, my phone rang. It was Dustin’s hoarse voice on the line. “Lyanna, where did you go in the middle of the night?
Did you just leave me on the couch when I was drunk?”
He complained about me not being considerate, how he had been lying on the couch for hours, his back sore, smelling like alcohol, feeling nauseous, and no one had bothered to change his clothes.
I told him I was in the hospital.
“The hospital?
“Are you feeling unwell? I’ll come get you.”
He immediately sobered up, his voice tinged with an imperceptible concern.
After I told him the address, I hung up.
I placed a hand on my stomach. Inside, there was a little life I had once longed for, but this was not the right time for her.
The hospital wasn’t far from home, and Dustin arrived not long after.
He frowned and asked what had happened.
I instinctively hid the medical report, hesitating before speaking.
“It’s just low blood sugar acting up.”
He let out a relieved sigh, but his words were as ironic as ever.
“Lyanna, you really know how to make a scene. How could someone go to hospital for low blood sugar in the middle of the night?
Let’s go. I’ll take you home.”
I wanted to tell him I was pregnant, but I didn’t know how to bring it up.
While I was still pondering, Dustin’s phone rang again.
It was Renata calling.

She was sobbing dramatically, saying she had twisted her ankle when she dropped him off, and it was hurting terribly. She begged him to come with her to the hospital.
Dustin’s expression immediately shifted to concern. He hung up and told me to take a cab
home while he rushed off.
I stared at the medical report I hadn’t yet shown him and couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
I felt that maybe even if he knew about the baby, he wouldn’t care.
On my way home, I wasn’t surprised to see Renata’s tweet.
“I accidentally twisted my ankle, and Mr. Lawson kindly came all the way to the hospital to help me, really sorry to trouble him so late.”
The post had a photo of Dustin gently massaging her ankle, followed by a selfie of Renata smiling sweetly at the camera.
I stared at it blankly and gave it a like.
I felt Dustin was really something. Just when I had decided to leave, he could still make me
disappoint.
I had scheduled a miscarriage procedure for the day after tomorrow.
When I got back to the house, I packed my things and went to the hotel.
I felt a pang of sadness. I suddenly realized that after leaving the Lawson Manor and leaving Dustin, I didn’t even have a proper home.
After a long sigh, I dug through my suitcase and pulled out an envelope.
It was the letter of acceptance from the University of Aeloriae, where I had been invited after winning a new designer competition.
The professor, Kendrick Newman, loved my work, a fusion of traditional elements with
modern aesthetics.
Back then, I had turned it down because I didn’t want to leave Dustin, but Kendrick had told me I was always welcome to change my mind.
I opened my email and sent Kendrick a message.
Once that was done, I headed to the wedding venue to bid farewell to Johanna and
apologize for disappointing her expectations.
When I arrived at the hotel, it was still early, and the guests hadn’t arrived yet.
The grand banquet hall was empty.
I gazed at the sea of pink roses and suddenly remembered how Renata had insisted on using them despite my request for fresh, simple orchids.
Dustin let her do whatever she wanted, never considering my feelings.
Now as I thought about it, I felt perhaps from the very beginning, this wedding was doomed.
I forced a smile and considered resting in the makeup room while waiting for Johanna to arrive.
But to my surprise, Dustin was already there, and sb was Renata.
“Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to wear the bride’s wedding dress, Mr. Lawson?
Aren’t you worried Ms. Faulkner might get upset?”
