It was already evening after I submitted my resignation and handed over all my work.
I could go home tomorrow, but as soon as I stepped out of the company, a sharp pain shot through my heart.
The System told me it was Backlash, a parting gift before I could go home.
I squatted down for a long time, trying to ease the pain, when I suddenly remembered my
kitten at home.
1
I adopted the kitten from the roadside after arriving in this world. Before Charlie Lewis took an
interest in me, it was my only comfort.
Without it, I’m afraid I would have broken down long ago.
When I got home, I unlocked the door from memory, only to find the entire house had been
transformed.
The slippers I always left by the door were gone.
Not only that, the couple’s photo on the TV cabinet and the succulents I kept in the kitchen
had all been thrown out.
In their place were a photo of Charlie Lewis and Karen Lynn, and Karen Lynn’s favorite bouquet of lilies.
I stood there, stunned, before rushing to the cat room.
The cat room had been completely emptied and converted into Karen Lynn’s dance studio.
The kitten is gone.
I searched the entire house, inside and out, but there wasn’t a sign of the kitten.
A wave of panic washed over me.
Click.
The front door opened.
A soft moan escaped.
I watched Charlie Lewis pin Karen Lynn against the wall, one hand gripping her waist, his
head buried in her neck.
Karen was about to return Charlie’s embrace when she caught my eye, and she was clearly
startled.
“Charlie, someone’s here…”
Charlie clicked his tongue in annoyance, glaring at me as if he wanted to devour me, then he
froze, stunned.
I fought back nausea and stormed over to confront her.
“Where’s my cat?”
Karen Lynn smiled, saying nonchalantly.
“I’m allergic to cat hair, so I threw it out last night.”
Tears streamed down my face, and I instantly felt ice–cold.
My kitten is so timid and affectionate.

Tears streamed down my face, and I instantly felt ice–cold.
My kitten is so timid and affectionate.
Karen Lynn actually had the heart to throw it in the garbage dump.
I trembled with rage and instantly grabbed her by the collar.
“Where did you throw it?”
Karen Lynn coughed, strangled, tears welling in her eyes.
“Speak!”
Charlie Lewis tried to pry my hand open, and I slapped him.
“Why did you let her throw away my Kitten? She’s not yours to raise!”

“Are you in such a hurry to welcome her into the family, Charlie Lewis? You’re truly hopeless!”
Charlie Lewis pulled my hand down, gripped it tightly, and brushed the tears from my eyes.
I glared at him.
“If my kitten is gone, none of you will get away with this easily.”
Charlie Lewis seemed flustered and coaxed me in a low voice.
“Don’t be angry. I’ll take you to find Kitten, okay?”
Karen Lynn forcibly dragged the kitten into the car.
I watched the surveillance footage of it, its claws desperately digging into the ground,
refusing to go forward.
But Karen Lynn dragged it into the car without hesitation and drove off.
I stared at her coldly.
“Lead the way.”
I drove, with Karen Lynn in the passenger seat directing me.
She directed me to a slaughterhouse.
The environment was filthy, the stench unbearable. Charlie Lewis endured his nausea and
followed me the entire way.
I could hear the miserable, aggrieved sounds of kittens and puppies coming from inside, as if they were waiting for their owners to rescue them and take them home.
My panic intensified, fearing something had truly happened to my kitten.
After getting permission from the boss, I rushed inside to search.
There weren’t many kittens and puppies, but they all looked haggard and barked at me.
So many kittens were meowing. I searched from dusk till dawn, but I couldn’t find it.
I bit my lip hard, terrified of crying.

Even the System sighed, trying to comfort me.
Perhaps in a few years, after the Kitten is reincarnated, you can properly care for it when you get home.

I bit my lip NARA, LEMINEA of crying.
Even the System sighed, trying to comfort me.
Perhaps in a few years, after the Kitten is reincarnated, you can properly care for it when you
get home.
I refuse to wait until the kitten’s next life.
Finally, just when I was about to despair, the boss pointed to a corner and asked.
“Is this her?”
I whirled around and rushed in the direction the boss indicated.
The kitten in the corner didn’t move. I couldn’t help but softly call out her name.
There was no response.
I reached out and touched her, only to realize her body was still warm, but she was already
gone.
In an instant, I broke down and wept.
I found the kitten.
But she just died.
If I’d found it sooner, I could have saved it. The more I thought about it, the louder I cried,
nearly fainting.
Charlie Lewis, his face grave, pulled me into his arms.
“It’s okay; we can always get another kitten.”
“How about we get a new one later, okay?”
My nose was filled with Charlie Lewis’s perfume, the jasmine scent that Karen Lynn loved.
I pushed him away, shaking my head.
“No, thank you.”
Charlie Lewis forced me to face him, demanding,
“Why? Why are you being so cold now?”
“Don’t you feel even the slightest bit flustered about me anymore?”
I gave a miserable smile, looked up at him, and found his question utterly baffling.
The boss suddenly spoke up.
“Hey, someone’s been banging on your car door, really anxious.”
It was Karen Lynn.
Charlie Lewis walked away as soon as he heard that.
But the instant he left, my heart clenched in pain.
I blacked out as the System called out to me.
